Welcome to the department of Preventive and Community Dentistry. The department focuses on the science and art of preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health through organized community efforts. Our faculty and staff are responsible for the planning and execution of community based extra mural experiences (both clinical and non clinical) and public health course work of the dental students.
CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
- Infrastructure
The department has an undergraduate clinic and a post graduate clinic. The department also has a special clinic for special care patients. The clinic is fully equipped with state of art latest instrument which is being used for patient education and treatment. A special oral hygiene instruction area has been dedicated for providing oral hygiene instruction.

All treatment rendered in the student clinic is performed under the direct supervision of experienced faculty who ensure that every aspect of your treatment meets professional standards of care. This close supervision ensures quality care.

Thus the department provides COMPREHENSIVE ORAL HEALTH CARE to patients both from dental camps as well as Out Patient Department.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Dental camps
- Dental camps are organised regularly twicw a week in neighbouring villages and schools to make dental treatment accessible to the under privileged.
Mobile van
- The department has two well equipped mobile dental vans with 2 and 1 chair each. The van is equipped to provide all kinds of dental care.
Satellite dental clinic
- The department also runs 2 satellite clinics for the benefit of patients who may not come to the college for treatment. The clinics are well equipped with all facilities to ensure quality care.
School oral health program
- The department has adopted a school in a nearby village. The students of the school are provided comprehensive oral health care through the growing years.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The department is designed to produce skilled and committed dental health professionals equipped with a broad knowledge of health problems and health delivery. The health professional also will be capable of assuming leadership roles in community oral health promotion, oral disease prevention and oral health research.
The curriculum provides opportunities for the students to select an area of concentration. They include oral epidemiology, public policy and oral health administration. The oral epidemiology emphasis focuses on the distribution and determinants of oral diseases. The oral health service administration emphasis is concerned with implications of public health policy on the structure, process and out come of the health delivery.
- Under graduate students
- Undergraduate students are trained in all aspects of preventive and community dentistry through clinical and outdoor activities. Clinical activities include comprehensive case history recording, oral hygiene instruction, oral health education, tobacco cessation counselling. Outdoor activities include visiting dental camps, giving health education talks.
- Post graduate students
- Post graduate teaching schedule contains extensive training program for the overall development of skills. The program contains seminars, journal club discussions, critical evaluation of articles, pedagogy exercises etc. The post graduate students will also be trained to provide comprehensive health care at dental clinics. The students will be trained to conduct research activities and make effective presentations.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
- The department regularly conducts research for the development of dental sciences. Several articles are published in reputed journals.
- Research is conducted regularly to monitor the epidemiology of dental diseases.
- The department also supports the Journal of Oral Health and Community Dentistry, an online journal with the intention to make dental research papers available to all.
